How to Use the Online Tuner

  1. Allow Microphone Access

Click "Start Tuner" and allow microphone access when prompted. Your browser will ask for permission — this is required for pitch detection.

  2. Select Your Instrument

Choose Chromatic for any note, or select Guitar, Bass, Ukulele, or Violin for string-specific guidance with target frequencies displayed.

  3. Play a String or Note

Play the string or note you want to tune. The tuner will detect the pitch and show you the note name and cents deviation.

  4. Adjust Until In Tune

If the needle points left (negative cents), your note is flat — tune up. If it points right (positive cents), your note is sharp — tune down. When the needle is centered and green, you're in tune.

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is this tuner?

Our tuner uses autocorrelation-based pitch detection, which is accurate to within ±1 cent (1/100th of a semitone). This is professional-grade accuracy suitable for studio and live performance.

What is the difference between 440Hz and 432Hz tuning?

440Hz is the international standard (A4=440Hz) used in modern music. 432Hz is an alternative tuning preferred by some musicians who believe it produces a warmer, more natural sound. 415Hz is used for Baroque period music.

Why does the tuner need microphone access?

The tuner analyzes sound from your microphone to detect the pitch of your instrument. Your audio is processed locally in your browser and never uploaded to any server.

Can I use this for vocals?

Yes! The chromatic mode detects any pitch, including singing. It's useful for vocal warm-ups and pitch training.

What are "cents"?

A cent is 1/100th of a semitone. If your note shows -10 cents, it's 10/100ths of a semitone flat. +10 cents means 10/100ths sharp. Within ±5 cents is generally considered "in tune."

Is my audio uploaded to a server?

No! All pitch detection happens locally in your browser using the Web Audio API. Your audio never leaves your device.
