How does silence detection work?

The tool analyzes your audio in small time windows and calculates the RMS (Root Mean Square) volume of each window. Windows below the silence threshold are marked as silence. Contiguous silent windows longer than the minimum duration are then removed.

What threshold should I use?

For voice recordings in a quiet room, -40dB to -50dB works well. For noisier recordings, use -30dB to -35dB. For music, use -25dB to -30dB. Start with -40dB and adjust as needed.

Why should I keep some silence?

Keeping a small amount of silence (0.1-0.3s) between speech segments preserves the natural rhythm and flow of the recording. Removing all silence can make speech sound rushed and unnatural.

Will removing silence affect audio quality?
